Fail

This is exactly what I'm trying to avoid. I have a really generic toilet rug, maybe something like this one . Honestly don't remember where it came from. My robot vacuum gets stuck on it about 1/3 runs. At least it doesn't seem to get caught or damage the robot. Rating: ⭐⭐

Ruggable rugs

Ruggable rugs are pretty awesome: they combine non-slip with washability. My wife in particular really appreciates that they're washable. We have this one in our living room. Our robot vacuum does pretty well with it; it's very low pile, so there's nothing to get stuck on. There is one downside though: the non-slip backing doesn't go all the way to the edges, so the corners will often flip up when it gets vacuumed. Rating: ⭐⭐⭐⭐

Stuck!

Image
Through no fault of a rug, my robot vacuum got stuck again. It somehow got itself wedged under the legs of my desk chair to where it's not able to move except for spinning in circles. I think it jumped over the foot of my desk ; it's often able to climb over the foot, and in this case it happened to be the perfect way to get itself stuck. Video , if you're interested in watching it spin.

What am I looking for?

Let's talk about what I'm trying to find, and how I'll rate these rugs. The biggest problem for me is robots getting stuck on the rug. This can happen at least three ways: Shag or otherwise long rugs get caught in brushes Light or floppy rugs can be lifted into the main brush and get stuck Rug bunches up and the robot tries to drive over it, lifting one or more wheels off the ground Another minor problem is the rug moving under the robot. I have a rug in my bathroom that never stays where I want it to; every time the robot vacuums it gets pushed into the corner. The last important quality is that when the robot vacuums the rug, the rug ends up clean. Some textures might be hard for a robot vacuum to clean properly. So taking all that into account, this is how I'll rate rugs.  ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ - robot vacuums will never get stuck, rug will never move and will be well vacuumed ⭐⭐⭐⭐ - robot vacuums will rarely get stuck on this rug, but it may move sometimes or not be well vacuumed ⭐...

My search for better rugs

I've always loved the idea of having robots do my housework. So far, only robot vacuums seem like a practical solution, and I've owned one for a few years. I started with a  eufy RoboVac 11S in 2017, replaced it with a  Ecovacs DEEBOT N79S in 2019, and finally bought a real smart vacuum: a Roborock S4 Max , in January 2021. This is not a blog about vacuums though. My biggest problem with these vacuums is that they get stuck on my rugs. There's plenty of information about which vacuums are best for rugs, but I haven't found much in the way of which rugs are good for vacuums. I'm planning to do some research and post what I find here. Along the way I might also talk a little about my robots. Rugs are the primary problem, but they often cause trouble in other amusing ways.
